Rigging
The Balclutha is a historic three-masted, steel-hulled, square-rigged ship berthed at Hyde Street Pier in the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park.
Launched in 1886 by the Charles Connell and Company shipyard near Glasgow, Scotland, the ship carried goods around Cape Horn (tip of South America) 17 times.
It took a crew of about 26 men to handle the ship at sea with her complex rigging and 25 sails.
The next time you are visiting The City by the Bay, be sure to stop by and experience this wonderful collection of Pacific Coast maritime history. The San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park also maintains a lovely, family friendly beach with the picture perfect views of San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Hyde Street Pier. We never miss it!
