The gorgeous natural scenic area known as Southern Utah’s Red Rock Country is the ultimate destination for year-round outdoor activities including camping, picnicking, hiking, mountain biking and river running. “The Colorado Riverway Special Recreation Management Area is a scenic wonderland of colorful cliffs, river-carved canyons, lush bottom lands, and massive sandstone spires. As steward of the Public Land within the Colorado Riverway, it is the goal of the BLM to preserve the scenic and environmental qualities of this remarkable area, while providing opportunities for public recreation.” (Bureau of Land Management) Through the heart of it all flows the ruddy Colorado River.
Just north of the not-so-sleepy town of Moab, Utah you’ll find the intersection of US191 and SR-128E. Head east and you’ll be patting yourself on the back for years to come! Justifiably so! Around every bend of Scenic Byway 128 you’ll be amazed as Mother Nature’s handiwork unfolds in all its majesty. Brilliant red rock cliff faces, amazing clear blue skies and the twisting Colorado River all come together in a spectacular feast for the senses.
Easily accessible (mile point 9.9), but tucked away in this awe-inspiring setting, rests a clean, dusty-rose colored patch of sand known as Takeout Beach. This scenic wayside is a take out point for rafts, kayaks, and canoes running the Colorado River. Autumn is the perfect time of year to enjoy a quiet picnic, breathe in the crisp fresh air, catch some rays, and relish the season’s solitude on the banks of the Colorado River. Takeout Beach is the perfect place to relax and take in the natural beauty of Southern Utah’s Red Rock Country!
We feel very lucky to have had so many opportunities to travel through, and appreciate, this gorgeous part of the country on our frequent trips between Albuquerque and Salt Lake City! Taking the time to enjoy Takeout Beach is an extra special bonus!
Stay safe! Have a wonderful and colorful day at the beach!
