“Top Ten” Mile Coastal Trail *Mendocino Coast, California* Ten Mile Haul Road Trail

Posted by Jody on September 20, 2011

There’s an incredible seaside walking trail that begins just north of Fort Bragg, California and continues northward for almost ten miles.  The Mendocino Coast’s Ten Mile Haul Trail captivates walkers and joggers with its beautiful Northern California coastal scenery as it meanders along the bluffs and across sandy beaches for all to enjoy.

The old Haul Road was used by logging trucks many years ago because they were just too large and heavy for the main highway.  Now a decaying stretch of asphalt, it runs in bits and pieces along the coast disappearing here and there amongst the sand dunes and coastal headlands. You pass through areas where the old road as been reclaimed by the ocean and stretches that span bridges and trestles. Each mile of the Ten Mile Haul Road Trail is different. Tempting varieties of footpaths, boardwalks, other trails and detours are abundant along the way. Along the ocean, over the creek and through the woods, this wonderful trail certainly doesn’t lack for variety!

Please pay attention to all posted advisories and conservation efforts.  Along the route you’ll hike through Snowy Plover nesting grounds and past a sea lion rookery.  In the spring look for the nesting cliff swallows on Ten Mile bridge towards the north end of the trail. At the north end of McKerricher State Park you’ll find dunes that can reach heights of 130 feet. A number of protected species have made these dunes their home.

Check out the maps and narrative made available by via this handy Mendocino County link.  *There is one link for the southern section of Ten Mile Haul Road Trail and a separate link for the northern portion. You’ll find parking access and facility information too.

We can’t wait to go back!  The Ten Mile Haul Road Trail is truly ever changing, thus  never ending! -J-
