New Jersey’s Top Ten Beaches

Posted by Jody on September 27, 2011

Update 5/25/2012: The results are in for 2012! New Jersey’s Top Ten Beaches – The Wildwoods wins again!

Gotta love democracy!  Over the last few years, New Jersey, The Garden State, has been holding an online contest to name New Jersey’s Top Ten Beaches.  Both residents and tourists can vote on their favorite New Jersey beach. What a great idea!  That’s the way to get the real scoop from actual beachgoers.

The annual New Jersey’s Top Ten Beaches survey asks for voters to choose their favorite beach for: family destination, eco-tourism and day trip. With over 127 miles of sandy coastline, the contest does narrow down the “best beach” voting choices. New Jersey’s Top Ten Beaches competition began in 2008 with The Wildwoods taking home the top prize.  In 2009, Ocean City, New Jersey took over the #1 spot. And in 2010 The Wildwoods regained the top honor. The Wildwoods are actually a set of three beaches. They are three of the only five beaches on the Jersey Shore that are always entry-fee free.

According to nj.com: “”The contest is run by the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium, an affiliation of colleges, universities and groups dedicated to advancing knowledge and stewardship of New Jersey’s marine and coastal environment.”

The results of New Jersey’s Top Ten Beaches for 2011 – 4th Annual online contest kept The Wildwoods in the top spot!

  2. Long Beach Island – (Six municipalities on “The Island”)
  3. Ocean City –  “America’s Greatest Family Resort” , #1 in 2009
  4. Sea Isle City
  5. Cape May
  6. Asbury Park
  7. Seaside Heights
  8. Island Beach State Park/Berkeley Township
  9. Cape May Point
  10. Sandy Hook

The Wildwoods, Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Cape May and Cape May Point are all part of Cape May County, New Jersey’s southernmost county. Cape May County is home to 30 miles of clean, sandy seashore.

In 2011, the competition added a photo contest of the New Jersey coastline. You can check out the category winners and beautiful photos at New Jersey’s Top Ten Beaches.  Past Top 10 winner lists are also available.

The contest is open from February to March of each year with New Jersey’s Top Ten Beaches results available in May. We’ll keep that in mind and update you when it’s time for you to exercise your right to vote!
